Elizabeth Thompson Nelson, MD

Elizabeth Thompson Nelson, MD is a board certified Internal Medicine Physician. She has served the Greater Beckley Community as a physician since moving to Beckley in 2009. Dr Nelson was a Hospitalist at Raleigh General Hospital as well as the Beckley VA Medical Center. In July of 2019 she started an office based practice at the Southern West Virginia Clinic. She decided to trade the intrigue of Hospitalist Medicine with the depth and endurance of office based medicine.  The relationship  Dr. Nelson builds with her patients has  allowed her to partner with them to achieve their health goals.

A routine physical examination and subsequent follow up visits ensure that you  remain in good health.   We will also treat as well as prevent  diseases before they occur.   We will review vaccinations, order labs and screening tests,  as well as address any concerns that  you may

 have .

Doctor Office


Annual pelvic exams should be performed in addition to a thorough clinical breast exam.  Both  are part of routine  preventive medicine for women.  During these visits women share any genitourinary concerns.

A procedure to test for cervical cancer in women.   It is recommended every 3-5 years , more frequently in women determined to be high risk. 



We will do a risk assessment and recommend vaccines based on your age and medical conditions.  Please bring a record of your vaccinations, including your COVID-19 vaccination if you have had one.  We can  screen for COVID-19  in the office  if needed.  The results  will take 48-72 hours.

 We  will take a thorough history, make recommendations and start  prenatal  vitamins if you are considering pregnancy.     We  prescribe birth control,  but do not insert IUDs or implants.  We do  recommend a local OBGYN for pregnancy planning or other GYN  procedures you may need.

Questions about your bill

What billing or insurance information will I receive?

​You will receive a copy of your bill. After your insurance has paid, we'll provide you with a monthly statement of your account.

How long will it take to get things settled with the insurance company?

Generally, it takes from 45 to 60 days to obtain payment from an insurance carrier.​

Why am I getting bills from other physicians/Hospitals?

​You'll receive bills from other physicians/Hospitals is for the use of their facility, professional or technical services rendered by them.

Any questions pertaining to bills from other providers should be directed to that provider, and not to Beckley Internal Medicine.


I want to know about Screening Procedures?

Some insurance companies may not cover screening or other  procedures, for this you are responsible to check your insurance carrier before, our staff will make an attempt to contact and prior  authorize the procedure as a courtesy to our patients but ultimately its your responsibility.

I received a notice that my insurance company has paid on my bill, but I can't understand how they calculated their payment amount. Do you know?

​If we have received any such information from your insurance company, we'll be glad to share it with you. However, for answers to any questions about insurance payments, deductibles, or co-payments, you generally need to check with your insurance company.
